Question for the Toyota experts around here. Were there any changes in the A43D trans from years 88-95, specifically the extension housing bushing? I have a 93 2wd PU.

ATP makes a replacement part (RB-13), but that part only goes up to 88. I called ATP and they were aware of no changes to the A43D but could not say definitively if the RB-13 would work in a 93.

Speaking w/my local Toyota parts dealer they do not even show that extension bushing on their parts schematic for my year, but they do show it for the 88 and below. So there's that. 

Using the OEM Toyota part # 90999-73035 as a cross reference, I've reached out to several online vendors who indicated that is the correct part number for my application.

See if they can tell you if the driveshaft yoke has been changed. I don't remember any changes but that's a long time ago. For the life of me I don't know why they didn't use a bearing in the rear that would have solved the governor housing problem also.

I'll ask today Maineah, the shop is supposed to let me know whats going on as they installed the bushing last week but I experienced a metal on metal grinding while the DS is rotating, doesn't do it in neutral while pushing it so it has something to do w/the DS.

Make sure they check the U joints and carrier bearing the bushings usually just wear out without making a sound.

Metal on metal scraping sound?  Almost like a constant "your breaks are going to go out soon" sound, its not constant though, its only when the shaft is rotating. 

I checked the DS while I was at the shop and there is no movement, but there wasn't any prior to install. I just did it as a precautionary as I had some minor dripping after a rebuild.

Seems the bushing is problematic on these.  I have no idea what the original bushing looked like as the shop did the work as a courtesy.

A U joint can lockup and they will squeak, crack and make other unpleasant noises from lack of lube and rust. The only way you can really tell is with the drive shaft laying on the ground. The center bearing will usually cause vibration and/or a roaring noise. They did have issues with tail stock bushings more so in the cars not so much in the long wheelbase trucks with a two piece shaft. The cars drive shafts were at a greater angle whereas the trucks remained pretty flat supported by the center bearing the rear shaft took more of the movement.

Yeah the two piece DS w/the center support can be tricky. I've also got a newer Tacoma 4WD w/the 2PC design. One of these days I am going to have a 1PC made. When installing a taller lift on the rear I had to pay attention to the angles as to not impact the original spec.

Turns out the problem w/my 93 was the outer dust cover (thinner metal cap) it was bent when reinstalling the DS so it was making contact. They swapped it out and all is quiet now. At least for a little while. :rolleyes:

Yep that will do it you kind of have to take that part off to replace the bushing or seal it sometimes is difficult getting it back on properly. The last two Tacomas (one with over 300K) I have had,had two piece drive shafts and my new one does I never had problems with them other than U joints with age. I have seen replacement single piece drive shafts damaged on certain lifts not being deep enough to avoid connecting with the shaft when the diff hangs down.
