Alaska 2017

Recommended Posts

Will be heading out for Alaska Saturday the 10th. This will be the second Alaska trip for me. First one was in 2010 in a 1984 Dolphin. This adventure will be about 4 months. I will be alone until August when my wife will be flying to Anchorage to meet me.

Got to see the Alaska state fair in Palmer. Got a large to do-see list.  If there is anyone out there with points of interest give me me a jingle. Don't know how often I will have internet but when I do I'll send pictures.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've made it to Prince George British Columbia. Driven about 1200 miles. Getting 14.44 mpg so far. No problems, no bears, no moose. Beautiful country.

Nice pictures (and fish) Darrel. Couldn't help but notice the 'skeeter-proof shirt. Have you needed it for most of the outdoor portion of the trip up there, or just fishing? Glad to hear no problems so far.

Safe travels.

Sketers are bad, got a few welts so the sketer jacket is always close by.

WOW, Darrel, fantastic, keep those photos coming.

I read up on these personal Mosquito repellents you can put on your belt, or get a lantern

 https://www.amazon.ca/ThermaCELL-MR-XJ-Mosquito-Repellent-Appliance/dp/B00LM93Q0Y/ref=sr_1_3/147-1075444-6849368?ie=UTF8&qid=1498346882&sr=8-3&keywords=thermacell+lantern

they protect out to 15 feet, runs 4 hours per load.. Now you have me curious why they would build a machine to crush trees? Is there some story there about a war on trees?

Yes there is a story. Williston lake was to be built. The peace river to be damned up and create this lake. Hope you can read the place.

Kiskatinaw curved wooden bridge, old Alcan Hwy.

This bridge took as long to construct ad the Alcan Hwy did.

Haven't had WiFi for awhile. I'm a Watson lake. Saw quite a few animals. Soaked in Liard hot springs, got relaxed. Fred was it you that has a sign posted here, if so do you remember where?  The picture of rear wheel, I had a clicking for two days and in got louder, came from the left rear. Had all kinds of terrible thoughts. Turned out to be I had lost one of the screws from the plastic cover, it was flopping around. What a relief. Am expensive was inexpensive.

just curious not on the mosquitoes as much as the black flies there. My cousin went there once and said the flies there can get so bad in summer that they can actually KILL animals by draining them of blood and that their voraciousness knows no rival in the lower 48.

He went on to add that while fishing there they had black fly attacks that were so bad because the flies, unlike mosquitoes had some intelligence to them and would crawl around on your suit looking for any opening to get into and once in the extreme biting would begin... YIKES

Well I can see the link and killing is involved but livestock. Don't quite understand how a toxin that this one black fly has can kill cattle but not people. I'm from New York but never even heard of black flies until I went on a white water canoe trip in New Hampshire. OMG they take a chunk out of you not just a string and instead of itching for a few days the bites cause pain for 2 weeks. I had scars I could point to where I got bit for a year. Very nasty but short season for them. Hope Darrel has missed it

The link works for me too. Here's the 'relevant' bit:-

" In Canada, black flies cause human suffering and are a scourge to livestock. In the Athabasca River region of northern Alberta, weight loss in cattle caused by the black fly attacks in one outbreak (1971) amounted to 45 kg per animal; 973 animals were killed in one area alone by Simulium arcticum, a species whose saliva contains a toxin which in large quantities causes anaphylactic shock and sometimes death in cattle. In Saskatchewan, 1,100 cattle were killed by this black fly species during the outbreak years of 1944-47."

Never will forget backpacking in Algonquin National Park in 71. Clouds of black flies! Used up a whole bottle of 100% deet and my ears almost fell off! Nasty powerful stuff but necessary to survive! Next trip up there had a black fly net hat. Never leave home without it LOL!

No black flies but there are horse flies. In 2008 on a road trip to Yellowknife I clocked horse flies at 45MPH. They can take a chunk out of you.

Did not have cell service. I'm at Whitehorse now, got to take a shower and do laundary. The bed will feel good tonight. Speaking of bed I must hit the hay it's 11:35 and still light. Will post pics tomorrow.

Around here, we tend to call them 'deer flies'. Few horses around, more deer (and moose). I've no idea if there's any real difference, but yes, they can take a good chunk out of you! They seem to prefer/see dark colours. Walking a black and a tan dog together, they'll swarm the black dog much more than the tan dog.
