My Toyota Motorhome

Location

  1. So in Early June I bought an 85 Dolphin, did the research on the axles, and decided to go for it on this $3,000 buy. Figuring I would have some damage to repair, I truly did not realize that the entire house was rotten. My mechanic gave me a decent tune up, and it seemed to be doing fine, until I really started to get into the remodel. I completely took the thing apart. I think the only original pieces will be the seats, the dash, and some wrought iron from the decoration. With the demolition work that was happening, I occasionally turned over the engine to hear that beautiful 22re purr. Eventually I had to start charging the car with my turbo engine if I wanted it to start. and that's when I started to notice the engine fixes that my mechanic missed, and I am now questioning. On top of doing a complete house rebuild from the chassis up, I think I need a new alternator (starter is new), I'm going to need to update my leaf springs (shocks are new from prev owner), I'm going to need to replace the fuel sending unit (gas gauge doesn't work), and the exhaust doesn't pass smog, and I didn't realize that the previous owner had been using a fluid to fudge the results, but there are obvious holes in the exhaust system I did not see when I purchased. I guess I really just came in here for some help, or encouragement. I won't be able to start work on it again until March, and its had me thinking is it worth it? do I attempt to see just the stripped machine to someone for some money to recoup my losses, allowing myself to have the space for another project, that isn't in as deep of water, or do I carry on? for those of you still active, What would you do? would you rebuild your entire rig, or just get another one? one with more horsepower, weight capabilities etc? I liked the idea of the 85 22re because I knew it would be a rig I could learn mechanics on, really take my life into my own hands, get dirty, and learn. I've always wanted to learn, and newer machines are too complicated at 22re's really have the books & forums to set you up for some great DIY. I just think the more I rest on not moving forward, the bigger the project seems, and I'm beginning to feel overwhelm and question if it really is worth it. I'm probably looking at $6000 to get the engine and chassis up to the snuff I want it at (with paid labor), and not to mention the $10,000 I had allotted myself to have a really nice build. Any advice / thoughts for a pal that just saw stars & a fun project?
  2. 1980 4x4 toyota sunrader. Having front and rear suspension done now. Next is the 2.7l 3zr swap done by previous owner. First thing I'm attacking is the floor. I have some pics. Looking for good advice. What order do you start in? I'm think floor up? Remove camper or leave it on?
  3. Hi all New member but a long time lurker & first time poster to this site. With everything that's been going on and effectively being stuck at home for 3+ months we're looking to get a family RV and wanted to see if any members are in/around the Portland metro area and would allow my wife and I to check out your Sunrader or Winnie Warrior. Happy to be talked into other models as well. We're a family of 4+. Also a little bit about myself/hobbies: I am an avid fan of Toyota, own older Toyota LandCruisers and am A) very familiar with the older Toyota platform - mechanical & electrical, B.) Do my own work and C) know what I'm getting myself into with a 30+ yr old vehicle (albeit a bit more to bite off with a moving home strapped to a Toyota Chassis 😂). Cheers Kent
  4. Hey Everyone! I have a 1986 Toyota RV (21 feet) that I am selling. ANY info/advice/help/consult is MUCH appreciated. Here are the dets- you'll see why I need help! 1986 Toyota Sunrader, 21 ft. Approx. 116,000 original miles Dual-Axle (original) Automatic, 4-cylinder Fuel-Injected Runs great, but stalls out sometimes while in reverse for parallel parking Coach Set up: door is rear access to kitchen and bathroom, with 2 sofas (someone re-modeled it that way- but only one is set up as I was planning to convert it into a storage system), + over cab bed When I bought it, the stove/oven + coach AC/heat all in working condition as of last time I was hooked up. Have replaced all 6 tires, sewer system, shocks, battery, alternator (about $3k) There is a very slow, small leak coming into the kitchen in the back when it rains, but I cannot for the life of me find where it is coming from. My guess is- the backup camera installation done by one of the previous owners. I am selling it in the San Francisco Bay Area. I want to be fair, but also not get screwed. Thank you so much for any replies- anything helps! Tips on where to even start, pricing, what I should include in the listing, etc. I am having a hard time uploading pics but will keep trying...
  5. Hi everyone. My name is Tye. I'm a disabled Navy veteran living at a VA domiciliary in Leavenworth, Kansas. Upon completion of my treatment here, I plan to have a motorhome of some kind. I'm currently looking at a 1986 Toyota Gulfstream Conquest 4 cylinder automatic. It looks very nice in the ad, but being that I'm a complete amateur, I felt I should do my due diligence and seek advice from the more experienced toyota motorhome owners. I really wanted a Sunrader for their unitized fiberglass mold which is supposedly legendary and the most sought after because it's virtually leak-proof. Does anyone have any knowledge about the Conquest that they can share with me? I'd appreciate any help I can get. Thank you.
  6. Good afternoon folks, I have an '86 Sunrader which because I haven't ever owned and RV before has been basically a tent on wheels for me and my three dogs. I'd really like to put the RV to full use but I can't figure out a way to get to know how to use all the appliances and such all. What website, YouTube channel, other resource would you suggest that I use to educate myself? Thanks in advance! Jen dog_logic@yahoo.com
  7. Hi my name is Edd. I am a new sunrader owner. I want to find somewhere that will make custom wheels for my sunrader. Can anyone help me? Denver.
  8. So right now I'm a long-haul trucker. I live in the state of Missouri and my rig (Damon escaper 1984 22R carbureted).I need to do a lot of upgrades but I do not have a shop. I need to even do an engine swap or upgrade the motor .a lot of suspension work. And some upgrades to the interior (none of the water works right ,I don't know if the propane system works, and fixing replacing some water damage)I would love to do all the upgrades myself but at the current moment I cannot. Anybody recommend a shops that I can take it to within a few states.
  9. Hi all, I have a new to me 18' Sunrader. I love it, but of course, I am looking at updating it a bit. I am not handy though. And I don't really have that much time to learn and work on it. Everything in it is working as of now. I would love to make it prettier and update the appliances- hopefully with lighter weight appliances and a bit smaller. I also want to get rid of the bathroom altogether. How much do you think it would cost to have this little guy renovated for me? I am not averse to spending some money on it, but I don't really have a good sense for how much I should be putting aside for this project. Of course, I would love to take it all the way down to the fiberglass and do it right, but I need to get a sense of costs and put together a plan before I start anything. Thanks for any advise- no matter how disheartening!
  10. I have a rear window leak. I've heard all I need to do is pull apart the rear window, clean around put in some butyl tape and maybe add some extra silicone, and put it back together. I also have an overcab leak, it seems to be lined up with the seam over my overcab, so I guess I can pull off the bar that goes over it, clean it up, apply some butyl tape there, and put it back on? Is Dicor still the best thing to pour onto my roof? The thing is, my entire toyhome seems to have tape that uh... is probably well over 10 years old. Should I just take my toy to someone and have them re-seal the whole thing? Or is it better to not mess with an area until it leaks? If I'm thinking about mounting solar cells to my roof, should I seal before I do that, after, or both? If I should take it to someone, who? I'm in the mid-atlantic near DC right now.
  11. Hi! I know where my two-hole OBD "short me and I'll blink a lot" connector is on the driver side in that rubber protective dealio, that's not what I'm talking about here. Do all 22RE engines have a DLC connector? For clarity I am asking if I have one of these: I looked all over underneath the hood in all the places I've seen suggested: Next to the strut towers, next to each of the fuse boxes (hood and cab), next to the EFI, under the steering wheel... I know my MH is old at 1986 but it's EFI, so there has to be an ECU that allows me to read diagnostics while it's running.......... right? Sorry if this question is the dumbest thing you've ever heard! ?
  12. I am currently searching for my "escape". Hopefully, a Toyota. I had a Toyota Chinook back in the 80's and loved it, and it seems times have changed. I'm still looking for another Toyota that gets good MPG (no, really), has a little room and a stove for coffee. I am open to any suggestions on models, makes....
  13. Hi everyone, I'm a musician, museum curator+docent, and huge nerd, and I'm the new owner of a 1986 travelmaster savannah. I plan to take it on tons of adventures and do other fun stuff with it, like weird upgrades. I've got some weird ideas, and also I thought someone might be interested in following a noob's adventures or hearing about my hopes and dreams for the thing, so kablam, here I am. Oh, whenever I use "we", you can pretend I'm using the royal we (as long as you don't say it all snooty-like), but that's something that I've deduced with the help of a mechanic as I am technically-minded but at best I am beginner-to-intermediate in car/RV skill. Hopefully that improves with time! Things I know about my RV: It's mostly (?) original Engine is amazing, and low (32k! couldn't believe it until we drove it) miles Transmission was swapped out a year ago (unsure what was wrong with the last one), now it's 4spd OD auto. Tanks seem to be in good condition! (though my dump valves seem to leak slightly?) Water pump and sinks are good. Propane works. Water Heater works. Roof A/C is cold (yay!) and needs some of the rotatey bits tightened up We think the regular heat works. We are pretty sure my generator works. "Major" repairs required: Fridge - it's a dometic 2-way, we are guessing it's a control board but there is a bit of a smell, could be suffering the ammonia angle issue thing Toilet (Aqua Magic IV) valve needs forcing open and/or shut. Perhaps a spring or a catch? Toilet itself is in one piece, rinses ok, etc. Leak in the top driver side corner overcab, and rear window on the left. We're gonna make with the sealant like whoa. Things done so far: Replaced all marker lights up top (5 front, 5 back, 2 side) with LEDs. Replaced interior lights with some very nice soft white 1141 LEDs I found, will report back on how they fare since I hear lots of stories. A/C - my compressor was fine but a hose exploded. Got some guy to fashion a new hose+clamp that will hopefully work for years to come. Speakers were factory and the previous owner upgraded the stereo but not the speakers. Fixed! Picked up a brand new water pressure regulator, freshwater hose, water filter, Uninstalled clock face in storage cabinets, not sure what to put there, though My todo list, in no particular order: Solar. Low flow shower head (this one looks nice) Low flow sink aerator (perhaps this one?) finish LED'ing everything-else: dome light en route. brake, back-up, parking lights, maaaaybe headlights? cell booster (which one? seems wilson weboost 4g-x is the best?) wifi booster (which one?) low-power always-on file server for music&movies, I will probably have to build this from scratch integrate aforementioned fileserver into dash for music on the go possibly overhaul entire dash into something completely customizable, think prius information display sensors, sensors everywhere (proximity, gravity, altimeter, level, weather/temp/humidity, etc) front/back/side cameras for the road and security logging all of the data that I possibly can from dash+sensors fashion a better rear bumper mount thing for my generator, perhaps something with some storage remove TV antenna, probably run solar/booster cables through that hole Stuff I'd like to figure out: If my tank meters work How should I log my places travelled? lots of people get bumper stickers and stick them to their wall/door/plaster their vehicle in them.... maybe I should get a removable sheet that I hang from the wall? I want to be able to take that with me... Paint job for the RV? What's the deal with interior lights (or is it interior 12V perhaps?) only going on when I have ignition on Do I have an inverter? I don't think I do. I should probably set one up. Should I upgrade my house battery? Should I get a sewer solution? Routes I'd like to travel: Entire length of US-1 Entire length of US-101 Entire length of Interstate 10 As much as possible of at least one Trans-Canada route Anyhow, this isn't yet a project log so I figured it belonged more in here than that forum (feel free to link me to good threads about my questions)! Aside from figuring out all of my stuff and things, I'd love to meet some folks, especially nerds and toyhome owners. I'll be full-timing once it's fixed, though! Hope to chat meet some of you soon!

  15. Hey so I've completely gutted my coach and now I need some tips on a few things, 1) Can I replace rotten timbers from inside? 2) What's the best way to clean seams to re-silicone? 3) Is there a way to fill old screw holes in the outside tin without patching with more tin from the inside?
  16. I am making progress on the Barkeeper/Zep upgrade to the exterior of Casper, my '87 Sunrader. I want to remove the crackled, aged paint between the two front windows. Any suggestions? Thanks, Iflyfishwithmytoyotabuddies
  17. Alright guys heres the situation my girlfriend and i are here from New Zealand and bought a 1980 toyota little chief in Vancouver around 2 months ago with the intentions of traveling across Canada and around the US, everyone assured us you cant go wrong with a Toyota, most reliable car around, will get you anywhere for far less gas, such fun much wow ect ect so after 2 months, 4 new tyres and quite a few auto parts store carpark fixes, we are in Belleville ON and the rear wheel bearing on drivers side has started making not so savoury noises. Its safe to say we are over it and what we are hoping is that one of you enthusiasts on here would want the little chief or know someone who does near here. We obviously want to get as much back as we can for it but are aware we are looking at a substantial loss. We are still deciding on plan b wether we will buy a mini van or something similar and continue on or look at greyhounds ect so this trip isnt a full loss. If you guys are interested, we want to hear offers that you would give us right now for it - cash money, so we can keep going. Even a vehicle trade of some description could work. Its a 20r motor with 4 speed trans, since we have had it i have reset the valves and had the timing reset and changed valve cover gasket, new exhaust mani gasket, new front main crank seal and changed oil pump o ring and checked clearances, 4 new tires, greased all grease points, changed both fuel filters and its running an electric pump new air filter and just had oil and filter done has the foolies on the back (wish i knew about them before we bought it) it has dual batteries with solenoid control House battery new and lasts for a few days with out driving. motor battery never goes flat. new 800w inverter New halogen head lights new fridge new oven\3 burner stove renovated Bathroom with toilet shower basin and mirror most globes led fold out couch and double bed above cab NO LEAKS new mixer tap in kitchen which allows for outdoor showers no rust at all airbags in the rear Cab interior mint and original 10 gallon fresh water tank 40 gallon grey unsure of black capacity but plenty for 5 plus days for 2 Plenty of storage There will be more ive forgotten but we will camp near here until Monday so we can ask a mechanic what the wheel bearings will cost to fix, we dont always have internet so can answer online questions fast but this is our number calls/texts welcome 604 367 4473 any advice on continuing in our little chief would be greatly appreciated too. Thanks guys
  18. Hello! I am looking at a 1987 Toyota Escaper with 77k on the engine. We're supposed to drive over to it today... 3 hours away.. and boy I wish I had found this site earlier! Anyways, I guess I am just looking for any advice I can get. I have never owned a camper or RV but have recently become obsessed with the Toyota mini motorhomes late 80's early 90's. My boyfriend grew up working on engines. American motors mostly, but we both currently drive Toyotas and drank the koolaid. He has a 99 Tacoma and very familiar with the motor at this point. Here's what I know. CRAIGSLIST AD "1987 Toyota Escaper22 RE engineRuns and DrivesRe-roofed with urethane in early 2016Tinted windows for UV shielding and heat controlShe has overdrive and cruise " Communications with owner "Former leak has been re-sealed NOT re-roofed with urethane based roofing sealer. , tires in fair condition, minor rust, timing chain, water pump replaced at 66k, original onan generator works fine." We pulled the carfax report and found all major repairs were made, and that it has had mANy owners... about 10 I believe. There was a mileage discrepancy but I spoke with the dealer it was reported through and they admitted to human error. Otherwise, no red flags. Any advice out there for a total RV newbie? Thanks! Lauren
  19. Hello! I bought my '84 Sunrader at the end of September, the previous owner had made lot's of "improvements". One of which was to take the inside frames off of the windows in the cabover bed, then he taped them on with roofing tape (the bane of my existence). Then he was confused about why it was leaking.... Anyway I have a very basic and possibly stupid question about the windows. I have one pulled out, am I correct in my assumption that the inside frame screws down to the outside frame creating a seal by tightening together on your sealant (butyl tape) ? Thank you in advance for your wisdom and help! I'll post pictures as I have them! Hannah
  20. I recently had my propane tank filled while on a trip out west. Once filled, I hooked it up and everything worked fine. When I returned home, I smelled gas while near the storage compartment. I turned OFF the flow at the tank and then flipped the switch to the Off position on the regulator. The indicator stayed Green rather than going to Red after several attempts. I can not get the regulator to the OFF position. I then attempted to disconnect the hose going to the tank. When I loosened it, a large amount of gas escaped so, I tightened it back. Any advice would be appreciated. If it is a faulty regulator, when can I buy one like the one presently there?
  21. Hello to all, I would be very appreciative if anyone can help with my problem removing the graphic tape on my 93 warrior. first off, I am very confused as to why only one color of the three color combo of graphics failed. obviously all three colors of graphics were applied at the factory at the same time, but for unknown reasons of the three colors only the MAUVE, has degraded, (severely cracked) whereas the powder blue, and light green graphics, while faded somewhat are really in very good shape. Anyone care to offer a reason or comment on this? The mauve graphics had been painted over a medium grey at some point prior to my owning the rig. At this point you can still see the cracks telegraphing through the grey paint, and as compared to the rest of the graphics looks quite ugly. so, I am attempting to remove only the failed mauve graphics and wish to replace with an aluminum or silver colored graphic vinyl material. My immediate concerns and questions are, what materials , techniques, and products would be helpful in the removal without any damage to the gel coat fiberglass siding, and are there any sources to purchase the original design of the graphics. most of the material I am replacing is a simple two inch and two and 3/4 inch tape, but on each cab door and further back on the coach on each side is a curved design I would like to replicate. My Winnie is pretty much pristine in and out with this one exception, any help, ideas, or suggestions would be a blessing, thank you all in advance, joe.
  22. Hey everyone. Just purchased a 1990. No idea on the manufacture of the RV as I can't find any sort of indication, maybe some of you can help on that. Dropped $3,800 for it and the engine and transmission feel great. I'm a work from home software engineer and plan to work really remotely now traveling the country. This has been a dream of mine for 5+ years and at 31 with no kids, no girlfriend, and my German Shepard Beast, I'm ready to head out in a few months after repairs. She's a bit ripped apart right now as I am learning, but I do intend on performing a total makeover. Now for the questions. 1. Rear tire (picture below) appears to be leaking what I assume is differential fluid, not sure how to fix that. 2. Over cab bed is in shambles. Where does one get materials to fix that? 3. The over cab bed front window over the driver side is cracked, I'd like replace those with some nice tinted windows. Where is a good source for that? 4. The generator appears to be leaking oil? What could that be? Since I'll be working out of this, I'd appreciate from hearing from folks who have done the same a long with any advice. Would like to hear from all of you actually thanks.
  23. I have done my due diligence and found Toyota to be the best fit for me...size, comfort, milage, reliability...Now I am looking for a Toyhome and planning on RVing full time...After reading a lot of the posts in this forum I have been very impressed with the friendly sharing of knowledge and advice for those starting a new life on the road...Suffice it to say, I lost my wife last year and after considerable thought, I decided to hit the road, see this wonderful nation, meet new people, and confront and learn new challenges that living on the road offers...I cannot think of a better way to express my strong desire to visit many of those I served with years ago that are scattered all across America...I'm looking for a Toyhome under $20,000...What is the best RV club to join for campgrounds, fees, and services..? Whatever advice you can give this newbie would be humbly appreciated...Thank you
  24. The short of it is, I just bought a 1981 Sunrader with the dreaded 5 lug bolted together dually rear axle and a broken clutch cable. The owner said the RV started acting weird so he parked it and after he saw online all of the horror stories about his axle he just assumed the axle was the problem and left it parked. So I'm not totally sure if the axle's bad or what but I figured it'd be smart to go ahead and upgrade it. And the clutch cable seems to have gone bad sense it's been sitting. Now, the plot thickens: I live in Roanoke Virginia and the RV is currently in Ohio, up near Youngstown/about an hour from Pittsburgh. My options seem to be: 1. Get the RV towed back home (400miles) and work on it myself. 2. Get it towed to a local shop in OH and be at the mercy of a mechanic that may be untrustworthy/knows I'm from out of town(also, I'm not sure if I would need to take it to just a regular auto repair shop or would it have to be a place that specializes in RVs, like with special lifts and things). 3. Throw that beautiful hail mary, fix the clutch cable myself then see if that axle has at least 400 miles left in it and attempt to drive it back home. My wife and I got it for next to nothing and that's the only reason I figured I had wiggle room to fool with the axle. I'm sure these are questions that have been asked a million times already, but I'm a total scrub when it comes to Toyotas. If I find a replacement rear axle assembly, what year ranges should I be looking for? Do any other rear axles work on these trucks other than the coveted full-float 6 lug? Could I get a more readily available rear assembly from a dodge/ford/chevy and mill a driveshaft adapter? (Only an idea because my uncle is a machinist) I found a rear assembly on craigslist in VA from a 6 lug 1984 4x4 truck, and for the price I'm wondering would something like that be heavy duty enough to take the place of the old/dually axle? This is the link: http://danville.craigslist.org/pts/5369577806.html I have lots of questions and I'd hate to over load everybody right off the bat, but I am just excited to get this thing home. I've been on the hunt for an 18ft Sunrader for 3 years now and this is also our first ever RV haha so thank you for your patience A little dirty but not in bad shape: Here's a shot of the rear end: And here's the hub:
