  1. Hi all, Just bought my first camper ever, an '87 Toyota Dolphin. Long story short, it needs work - work that I myself don't know how to do. I read great blogs and posts here about the amazing things people have done to their Toyota campers, but the writers are either trained, related/married to someone who can work on them, or just amazingly talented in RV repair from birth. For regular people like me, there's only one option: hire someone else to do it. Or is there another way? I'd love some information on how regular people like me can fix up their campers themselves. I can do basic DIY around my home, but I know better than to assume that transfers to RVs. What kind of basic equipment, like power tools, do I need? Where could I park it to work on it (I live in a townhome community where we're not even supposed to change the oil in the parking lot)? I'd like to partner with someone and learn the skills needed to fix it up - has anyone here ever done that? TIA for any information!
  2. So I've been scouring the internet, this forum, and so many others looking for images of what a stock 1985 22re engine bay looks like! I just can't Find ANYTHING that helps me. On top of not being able to diagnose why my motor decided to just stop starting. It isn't the battery, that hovers between 12.4-13.5 amps on my meter, the starter is brand spanking new, and idk, guess it could be the alternator?? It turns on all the lights, things like that, it starts when I jump it, but even after letting it idle in my drive for 15 min or so, she still doesn't start after I shut it off. IM BUMMED My alternator is pretty disgusting looking, as there is evidence from the previous owners mismanagment of an oil leak. so I'm hoping it's not the cause of the failure. It was running just fine until I parked it, and took the whole house apart. (didn't expect that, it just had to happen once I realized the level of rot I had gotten myself into). ALL IN ALL, I'm just looking for some folks to maybe share what their engine bay's look like from 1985 that haven't been all modified to heck like the internet likes to show me. The Hayes Manual isn't really helpful, and I'm waiting for my chilton to come in the mail. DETAIL ON STARTING ISSUE: All lights come on, but not A/C or Heater... I don't have a stereo so I can't do the AM radio check. Once I go to turn it over I hear a single click and a high pitched sound for the length of my cranking on the ignition. When I Jump it with my cute lil turbo engine soul, it kicks right up all the blowers work, there isn't any weird squealing sound.
  3. Anyone have access to the 1986 Toyota Dolphin Owner's and/or Repair Manual?
  4. Hey Everyone- I wasn’t sure where to best ask this question so I’m putting it here. I recently noticed that the siding on the drivers side of my 1987 Escaper is starting to separate a little at the seam. It’s not a major issue, but wanted to check with the experts to see if there’s a best practice before fixing it. I’m undecided between a few short screws to hold it in place or a few spots of adhesive and that’s what brings me here. It is dry underneath there and I intend to take wait as long as the sunny weather will allow before sealing it back up. Thanks everyone. Have a great weekend. -Matt
  5. Hey Sunrader Nerds! My 1985 Nissan Sunrader has a defunct emergency brake so I've been using tire blocks when I park it. I'm dropping it off at the car doctor this week and was hoping to locate a cable for the e-brake so I can have them fix it (I don't trust myself with this task at this point in my tinkering career). They mechanic was concerned that he wouldn't have the part. Does anyone know if it requires the same length cable as a Nissan 720 pickup or is it a longer cable? Bonus points if you include a link to purchase the part Thanks everyone!
  6. Hi, my fiancé and I are fixing up a 1983 Toyota Dolphin that has water damage in a section of the ceiling. Re-sealing the outside is easy, but we don’t know where to start when it comes to tearing down the damaged ceiling and replacing it. Can anybody give me some instructions on how to do it ourselves?
  7. Hello. I have a 1984 Toyota Sunrader 18' - rear dinette. I don't have any desire to use the shower/bathroom and was considering removing it for extra space or turning it into storage. Wondering if anyone has done something similar or if anyone had any advice. Thanks, Tyler
  8. My girlfriend and I moved into our 1985 Toyota Dolphin with the goal of driving to Chile from California. We spent months redoing the interior to turn it into our own home. Then Murphy's Law kicked in. A month and a half after crossing the border major car accident in Mexico. Well, we're rebuilding the old girl. Maybe I should say re-remodeling. This is the link to the total remodel plus pictures/story of the damage. Rebuild still in process! https://jacqui-belleau.squarespace.com/the-dolphin/
  9. I posted before about the original remodel my girlfriend and I did on our 1985 Toyota Dolphin. However, a car accident in Tepic, MX left the old girl in sad sorry shape. But we were not willing to give up on her! She's almost back together now. Lots of creativity wen't into getting this thing reassembled. Lot's of pictures and a write up here. http://www.followthewind.net/blog/2014/3/21/bcigm2cerr9m6kx14bm9b39ffvupfa
