  1. That is beautiful, looks like a gem you lucky sob. congrats.
  2. These are junk you want nothing to do with it, give me your buddies number and I will take it off his hands as to not burden you with this rig. Of course I am kidding, well not the giving me the number part. I have yet to find a 4x4 camper but sounds to me the rig has been somewhat maintained considering the axle upgrade. Good Luck.
  3. I have had many yotas over the years and albeit reliable the 20R just is like last poster said gutless. 500 bucks in mods imo doesnt equal a 22R with a few mild mods and comes no where near the 22RE IMO. The 20R just cant produce the torque, so no matter it will be slow. I wouldnt let that stop me. 1200 bucks for such a kool ride would be worth imo. I would drive it and see if you can live with it. If just a slight power increase is all you think you need then there you have it. But If you want more power at least you have the truck and can look into future power options later. As for the 5lug being fine it may well be, just not for me. I have never owned a Toyota camper or the like, I lurk here because I want a 4x4 version even if I have to build it. I think scoring a Chinook would be a very lucky thing. And quite frankly I know the six lugs are extremely durable. I guess I should have made myself clear on that.
  4. As for the mods to the engine...yes......they work. Cams are a big boost from my expirence. Look for a mid range cam as it is a nice comprimise. Most of those mods help in the HP department but I would look towards getting the torque numbers up. Again look at the cam for that. Carbs help huge also. Headers and the like dont add as much but when you use all the mods available together the power adds up. A 1977 I am assuming has the 20R....I would look into bolting in a 22R if its in the bugdet. As for tires I go over kill when ever I can. Do you know what axle is back there? I would investigate that too. If its a five lug I would want to change that to a six lug.
  5. The camry engine you speak od is truly a car engine plus is designed to run front wheel drive. The modern version of the 3.slow is the 3.4. The 3.4 was offered in later T100's and 95.5-2004 Tacomas. and I believe 96or95-2004 4Runners. The 3.4 is rated 190hp and 210 ft lbs of torque. I have one in my tacoma and am quite satisfied. Its is a dohc so tends to be a little on the high side of rpms to get those numbers. The newer versions of the Tacoma have a 4.0 liter rated at if memory serves 240hp.I have been looking for a junked Chinook for a few years to mate with a Tacoma 98-2004 V6, but no Chinooks have found me nor I them. The search will continue. I did find a local 93 Toy pick up on the cheap...I might grab it just for giggles and dump my Taco, I like the 22re....bullit proof and simple. Plus I have a whole mess of parts for the 84-95 Toyota pick ups. Even a camper shell, not that I consider it in anyway a sleeper. If some one has the 3.0 and its getting tired you might like to know the 3.4 is almost a direct swap. Some eletrics have to be dealt with, and from what I have read if you have a manual you stay manual. Same goes for the auto if thats what it started as you stay the same. There is a lot of info on it on the internet. All the sites I know detailing it are geared towards off roading(rockcrawling & mudding) but the info is the same. The 3.0 had some serious down sides when compared to the 3.4, take all that was wrong with the 3.0 and fix it plus more horsepower and reliability you get a 3.4.
  6. Ya I saw that, one of the questions asked was mine," was it one of a kind?" I saw it very soon after listed. Thank you for the heads up. Those are very cool indeed. I great camper for the toyota 3.4. I do wonder however about the rear axle....is it up to the job of that much weight? Would a swap of the axle be needed as well as the 22r? Now we are talking more than just the asking price. I will keep hunting for the handyman special(dirt cheap hopefully) so those upgrades dont seem a huge expense after the purchase of just the rig.
  7. It is a great site seems a little slow though, many seem to go to the yahoo site much more, to bad too this one is so much easier to use. As for LC they are a very good company with a good reputation. First I would need to know how many miles are on the 22r you have now. After that I would suggest if that is your only jaunt that typically involves hills, there are many cheaper mods that can help a great deal. There is a wealth of info on the net for this engine and valuable upgrades that aren't nearly as extreme as a turbo(extreme being cost and wear and tear). Granted they will not give the huge boost in power that a turbo will but if once a year is the purpose I think your money can be spent better in other places. I haven't seen to many rv folks discuss engine swaps but the toyota 3.4 used from 95.5 to 2004 have been swapped into 4x4's with the same engine bay that yours currently has.(don't know if them being lifted gives the extra room needed). The 3.4 is a huge jump in power and is very very reliable and has garnered the same rep as the 22r( bullet proof although a little more matainance is needed do to dual overhead cam). In my Tacoma with the 3.4 I can sometimes exceed 22 miles to the gallon although my driving style negates that more than not. But all in all keep it simple with slight power upgrades ie: cam, ignition, headers, free flow exhaust, injector up grade. Just my .02 good luck
  8. Ya youll notice in my first post in this thread I looked too.I have looked at great length for the maker of that rig and came up short. Was in Indiana this summer for a week and looked at the yellow pages in a few areas and found nothing. I think a set up like that is more doable in terms of cost than getting a raider or such. I figure doing up a Tacoma would be a fun truck, although I have yet to decide if it would remain light enough to stick with original rear axle. A full floater would be desired.
  9. Yes solid axle is my choice as I have had many pre 86 yotas(trucks 4runners). There are many kits to convert the independents to solid but for the tacomas it is very difficult and beyond my skill as they have little things like rack and pinion and so on. Just converting from rack and pinion to a steering box on a taco is daunting.....As for strength I would try to source out a fj80 front axle maybe even rear....if I were to go a complete hybrid. High dollar is right, and thats what makes me so crazy. I want a beat down no one wants it please haul it away rig. That way I can modernize and power up how I see fit. Swapping out the tried an true 22r may seem crazy to some but I would jump up a 3.4 as they are just as reliable and will fit as many in the rock crawling world have done it. The power is one benifit but I think gas milage wouldnt suffer to much as I can get 22 23 on the highway with mods I made to my taco. I think.....think being the operative word, independent would still work for a smaller rig like a chinook just a tad bigger 16' range. heck I could go on and on about my ideas as I have wanted one forever and thought about doing my own almost as long....On another sour note I never till a couple of weeks ago looked at your get togethers and saw you had an east coast one in Vermont . ........I live in Vermont, I would have enjoyed looking at some other loyal yota fans rigs in person. It will happen one way or another as for me Its yota or bust. http://www.brian894x4.com/Expedition4X4s.html Is a great page of modified yotas....and you will notice the conversion I spoke of before....Ken Trinder sent in the photos you will recognise the one you posted up but 3 other pics of it Anyway I am sure no one wants to read what is quickly becoming a book. 10. I have been watching the forums and drooling over the 4x4's in the main page for a long while now. I realize they are rare but dang even trying to pull my own conversion is daunting.I see Turbo has a pic posted of one that I found at another web site that was a conversion on I believe an 87. I have 3 other pics of it saved. Its white and kinda built like a chinook. I researched who was supposed to have made it but after countless hours of looking for the company(may be out of buisness)I have come up empty. Im am fairly good with yotas as I have had close to 20 of them but still havent landed my 4x4(camper). Even a total beater that needs my love would be awesome. Basically wanted to say hi and vent, you lucky sob's with 4x4's I am so jealous.
