  1. I'm replacing bearings, seals and shocks on my motorhome but looking down the road am thinking I should convert to a full floating axle. Derek I think it was you that posted a bunch of pages back with a link for a company that sells parts to convert a semi floating axle to a full one. Do you or anyone have experience doing this? https://frontrangeoffroadfab.com/full-floater-conversion/ I'm going tlllllo find a solid front axle toyota from a 4x4 and use the parts from the front spindles outward on my motorhomes rear end and get this kit. Perhaps I'll have to get a center section so the spindle count is the same? Not sure if that centre section would fit in my diff though. If anyone has any comments on this method id appreciate it.
  2. What would be the ultimate fix for my setup? I just found a 1991 4x4 pickup and I can have the whole assemble for $300 with suspension, would it be advisable to go this route?
  3. I've got the SKF bearings in my cart along with inner and outer seals. Anything else I should add rear end related before I press the purchase button? I'll be calling the shops tomorrow to get five Hankook RA18 tires.
  4. Hello folks, I made it to page 14 of this thread.... I just bought a 1981 Free Wheeler motor home, a standard 2wd model. Made in Chipman Alberta - not far from where I'm from. Another Canadian low production model. I have five bolt single wheels. My plan is to confirm the weights, get the axles x ray'd and replace the wheel bearings and get some D rated 185s on it. Sound good? It's actually 16ft 4 inches bumper to bumper. Anything else I can do so I can relax when on the mountain road? I got my wife and little guy in it.
  5. Thanks Joe appreciate the insight. I called around and that is the same price I'm hearing roughly. I found a aircraftsheet metal mechanic who's done side project for many years on RVs, just does structural work. He said he will look it over and give me a quote to put thicker aluminum (to handle Alberta hail) on it. I'm optimistic it'll be cheaper then the RV places and just a good quality. Does anyone know if the wood paneling is glued onto the walls or just nailed? The fella painted it white and I'd like to redo that down the road.
  6. Hes going to let me take if for a couple days on a long drive and to get a quote on getting a roof replaced. The interior work I'd do myself down the road in the off season.
  7. Went and saw the unit finally. It's a solid and straight truck which is running right. 95K oringal miles and not 195K Im sure. The cabin is bad though. The water leaked from one place and the fella painted everything white which was a terrible move. He sealed up the roof good I guess but its got some sags where the water came in the one spot. Can I get those original oak cross members or rafters? Roof replacement might be the way to go I suppose. Read some things on that now. Everything works well. It hasn't been molested except for the painting.
  8. Found some new threads on this site. Yikes not sure I want a wood unit now. Still going to go look.
  9. The idea I've right now is to take down the ceiling and replace wood crossmembers that are twisted from water damage. I like the original look and though I'd truly find old style wall paper to put on the walls. Not sure what the floor looks like yet but maybe replace with cork.
  10. Thanks for reply! Not a dually. He mentioned changing the rear suspension, rubber something, not airbags.
  11. Hello! Just new on the forum, I'm going to look at a 78' Dolphin. It's got 95K miles. I feel I know what to look for with regards to the drivetrain. However, the cabin I'm not sure what to inspect closely. I understand it's wood framed. The owner has said it leaked at one point and two of the oak cross members got wet and twisted. He resealed the roof... What's that suppose to look like? I'm not sure what to ask specifically here. Any general advice would be appreciated. I'm use to old vehicles and do my own work- timing belts, suspension, brakes and some basic autobody etc. I've got power tools and had the patience to frame then hang a door recently in the house.. It did take me three days to get it right tho.... He's asking 5K and we're up in Canada. I'll be looking closely at the undercarriage to make sure it's not rotten anywhere. Appreciate any and all advice!
