  1. Thanks, Mike. I hadn't even noticed the rims/tires were different sizes prior to checking them out for replacements; and even then, didn't occur to me that I'd need 2 spares. Think it would be better to go with 15" all around, but maybe 4-6 ply in front and in rear, D load, 6-8 ply ? Shocks were on my list as well and good to know that might solve the sway problem. Lots of bushes around here in N.W. AR and plenty of old stuff in some of these backwoods salvages; maybe I'll run over sumpin 4 wheeling. Can I still play even though I don't need an axle fix? K
  2. Hey y'all, even after reading till I'm about blind on this axle stuff, I need clarification for my 78 Chinook Newport. Checked the NHSTA site and I couldn't find the 78 Chinook listed in the recalls. Can I presume the 1-ton axle is not required? The truck has 14" tires on the front and 6 ply 15" rear that are either 8 or 10" wide. I checked on tires yesterday and one dealer suggests 8 ply tires for the rear. Theres some squeaking and swaying going on, so sway bars might be a good idea? Thanks for all the excellent info here. K
  3. What a cool site! My Toy is a 1978 Chinook Newport, 4 sp. m.t., with ~76K miles. I'm in N.W. AR in the Ozarks and enjoy outings to the Buffalo River during the off season. This is my only experience with m.homes and I like it alot. The forum experience is new to me also, so I'm begging forgiveness now for future . Thanks for all the info here and the pleasant tone of these forums. I noticed in the Yahoo forum, at least in the first 300 I read today, there were some AR folks posting back early on in 2000. Hope you're still around.
  4. My two cents worth...I've had a 1978 Chinook Newport since 1999. Only wanted to "rent" it from a neighbor, but he wanted to sell it. I figured to take my 2600 r.t. adventure and sell it when I got back home. Is my one and only m.h. experience. Gets 21 mpg and no matter how long it sits (sometimes 2 years), it starts right up, and goes on down the road. Haven't spent any money except oil/lube, tune up. It had 72,900 when I bought it and has 76K now. I guess you can't kill those old Toyota motors and that's what keeps me keeping it. Tires have lots of tread, but are dry rotted, so I'm looking into that issue. Somewhere, the house battery part has a short, but it's been there awhile according to older service records I got with it. No problem, I just unhooked the house battery. I'll trace it, if I ever decide I need it. Everything works inside, although it's not new and shiny, it's functional. I like that's it older and I can tune myself. It's outrageously expensive to service computer tuned vehicles, so I figure this is on the plus side for an older r.v. Have lots to learn, and like you, just found this site a few days ago; am interested in the axle issues, suspension etc. as well as fixing up in general. Good luck to us both.
